Kamchatka Earthquake Triggers Pacific‑wide Tsunami Alerts

A powerful earthquake with initial magnitude reporting between 8.7 and 8.8 hit near the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, at a shallow depth of roughly 19 km, centered just over 125 km from Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky. This quake is tied as one of the strongest globally since the 2011 Japan earthquake, and the most powerful in the region since the infamous 1952 Severo‑Kurilsk earthquake. The intense seismic activity triggered a tsunami warning for Hawaii, Russia’s Kuril coast, and a tsunami advisory or watch for the U.S. West Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington.
