Might the UK be getting colder with planetary warming?

Although global warming is sometimes linked with higher temperatures, its influence on regional climates can go opposite of what one would think. Regarding Britain, there is increasingly strong evidence that in certain circumstances, global warming might result in cooler working vacations. This phenomenon is mostly associated with modifications in oceanic and atmospheric circulation systems, especially with the weakening of the Gulf Stream.

The Gulf Stream's position and part in British ecology

A warm Atlantic Ocean current, the Gulf Stream is indispensable for regulating the climate of the United Kingdom. It transports warm water from the Gulf of Mexico to the North Atlantic, so the UK experiences gentler temperatures than other areas with similar temperature variety. The system could be disturbed by climate change though.

As the planet heats up, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet releases substantial quantities of clean water into the North Atlantic. This brackish water weakens the Gulf Stream circulation by dispersing the salinity of the sea. Published in "Nature" in 2018, a study revealed that the Atlantic Ocean Mid-Atlantic Overturning (AMOC), which includes the Gulf Stream, has slowed by 15% since the mid-20th century, with climate change further worsening the situation (Cesar et al., 2018).
