Every October, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) publishes its Worldwide Fitness Trends report. This year's list came out on October 20 and is the 21st edition. Here is what changed and what is worth trying.
Wearables Still Rule

Content ImageWearable technology took the top spot for the tenth time since 2016. It was also the only trend to rank in the top three across every professional role, work setting, and experience level in the report. Mobile exercise apps climbed from fourth to second, and data-driven training, which uses things like sleep and heart rate variability to tailor workouts, held at eighth. People clearly want workouts they can track and take anywhere.
Pilates and Mobility Keep Climbing

The "balance, flow and core strength" category covers Pilates, yoga, barre, and mobility work. It rose from fifth to third. Traditional strength training moved up two places to fifth. Fitness programs for older adults stayed in the top five for the fifth year in a row.
Group Workouts Are Back
Group fitness jumped from 13th to 7th, one of the biggest moves on the list. ACSM's Rachelle Reed points out that whether you stick with exercise matters as much as which type you choose. Classes can add support, accountability, and enjoyment.
Exercise, Weight, and Mental Health
Exercise for weight management stayed in the top ten as weight-loss medications become more common. ACSM's message is that exercise still matters, including for people taking these drugs, because it helps preserve muscle, strength, and physical function. Exercise for mental health and well-being also stayed in the top ten for the fourth year.

A Word of Caution
These rankings come from professionals predicting what will be influential. They are pointing at the direction of the industry, not the best workout. For example, influencer-led programs reentered the top ten, and ACSM stresses the need for credible, evidence-based advice.
How Much You Should Work Out
Trends change, fundamentals don’t. WHO recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity throughout the week for adults. It also suggests muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week.
Simple Ways to Implement the Trends
- Choose a wearable metric (steps or sleep) and monitor for a month.
- Go to one group class or Pilates session a week.
- Add two short strength sessions into your routine.
