But over the past few decades, it's totally transformed itself, becoming a massive global player that's really shaking things up.

From Humble Beginnings to Economic Juggernaut

The largest explanation China is where it is at now boils down to a huge economic change. Following a difficult time under Mao Zedong, a new leader emerged by the name of Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s and essentially said, "Let's do something different." He initiated what they referred to as "reform and opening up." Consider it as combining a little bit of market-type business with their current Communist system.
